In a 28-27 nailbiter, West Springfield handed South County their third loss in a thrilling overtime victory. The highly anticipated game followed questionable pictures taken over the summer containing Spartans players at South County High School.
Senior quarterback Scott Lewis picked apart the stallions defense to start the scoring, with a 20 yard touchdown pass to senior Samuel Heredia. Lewis threw for 133 yards, and ran for two touchdowns, one of them being the game winning touchdown. He was rewarded with the Nova Sports Media Team (NSMT) Player of the Game award after his performance.
“[This was] one of my best games so far,” said Lewis. “I can’t wait for the rest of the season.”
For the Spartans defense, junior linebacker Gavin Price was moved to cornerback, covering Stallions All-District wide receiver Trevion Campbell. Price allowed Campbell to one target in the first half, playing a large role in holding the Stallions scoreless. An 80 yard passing touchdown thrown by Stallions quarterback Dylan Miller began to shift momentum in favor of South County. The Stallions forced overtime, where they ended up losing by one point after a failed two point conversion.
